Marcel Paul Guide

With an interest in exploration history and as a keen hobby photographer, the North Pole and the Arctic have always been drawing Marcel's attention. At his first arrival to Svalbard in 2011, he felt connected with the remoteness of the place and the dynamics of the polar nature.

Marcel has been a keen traveller since his teens. After camping and trekking with friends, he led groups on treks to Austria, Switzerland, England and Scotland. His travels over the last 20 years, together with his wife Miriam, have brought him to all 7 continents. With an interest in exploration history and as a keen hobby photographer, the North Pole and the Arctic have always been drawing his attention.

At his first arrival to Svalbard in 2011, he felt connected with the remoteness of the place and the dynamics of the polar nature. At that time the idea to become a polar guide and give up a job that is keeping him indoors most of the time started to grow.

When the Dutch organised a scientific polar expedition to Edgeøya it seemed as the perfect opportunity to gain more knowledge from the area by working with the scientists. Marcel joined the expedition in 2015 as a field assistant and participated in various fields of research. In 2016 he went to the Netherlands Arctic Station in Ny-Ålesund, Svalbard, again as a field assistant followed by a first season as an expedition guide on Svalbard in 2017. He now guides in the Arctic as well as in Antarctica.

Living next to one of Europe’s biggest wetland reserves, the Biesbosch in Holland, Marcel often spends weekends on his boat with his camera always at hand.
