Fly & Cruise 2017/2018 - Classic Antarctica

Jump over Cape Horn and the mythical waters of the Drake Passage! This expedition combines a short flight between Punta Arenas and the South Shetland Islands with a ship cruise along the Antarctic Peninsula. A perfect alternative if you have limited time but dream of visiting the coldest, highest, windiest, driest, and remotest continent on earth – Antarctica.

Accommodation: Hotel in Punta Arenas, cabin on board Ocean Nova. Transport: Airplane, expedition ship, Zodiac. Ship: Ocean Nova. Passengers: 67 passengers. Languages: English. Length: 8 days, 5 nights on ship. Price: From USD 10 995.

Itinerary

Day 1: Punta Arenas, Chile

Arrive in Punta Arenas, where we are welcomed by the guides and transferred to a comfortable hotel. In the afternoon, we attend a briefing that provides important information about the voyage and reviews the essential guidelines for Antarctic visitors. In the evening we gather for a welcome dinner and meet our fellow adventurers while enjoying a typical regional menu.

Day 2: Punta Arenas – King George Island, South Shetland Islands

Our Antarctic adventure begins with a two-hour flight from Punta Arenas to King George Island in the mountainous and wildlife-rich South Shetland Islands, just north of the Antarctic Peninsula. As we exit the airplane, the clear Antarctic air fills our lungs for the first time. We explore the area surrounding Chile’s Frei Station and Russia’s Bellingshausen station, before boarding a Zodiac to embark the small expedition ship Ocean Nova, our home the following days.

Day 3 – 6: South Shetland Islands – the Antarctic Peninsula

Cruise between the South Shetland Islands and the western coast of the Antarctic Peninsula, sailing along ice-filled fjords and among spectacular icebergs, while enjoying the company of sea birds, penguins, seals and whales. Each day, disembark by Zodiac and explore the landscape together with expert polar guides. On board the ship, attend an engaging program of lectures and presentations, and enjoy spectacular views from the lounge while sharing your daily adventures with fellow guests. No journey is the same as flexibility is the key to success in Antarctica. The Expedition Team sets the voyage route to take advantage of the everchanging
opportunities provided by nature, crafting a unique and extraordinary experience each time. While the exact itinerary changes with each expedition, you will explore several spots that offer the best possible overview of the varied Antarctic environment. Your voyage may include visits to sites such as Paulet Island, Hope Bay, Port Lockroy, Petermann Island, Paradise Bay, Deception Island, the Lemaire Channel, or many other magnificent places.

Day 7: King George Island – Punta Arenas

Today it is time to bid farewell to Antarctica. We return to King George Island and fly back to Punta Arenas. Upon arrival in Punta Arenas we are transferred to our comfortable hotel.

Day 8: Punta Arenas

After a hearty breakfast we begin our journey home.

Please note: Flights to/from Antarctica operate based on weather conditions. If delays occur a contingency plan is offered. Our exact route in Antarctica always depends on ice, weather conditions and wildlife encounters. Flexibility is the key to a successful expedition!

  • Antarctica XXI

The expedition ship Ocean Nova was built in Denmark in 1992 and in 2006 she was completely refurbished and has now a career as a small and comfortable expedition ship. The Ocean Nova takes 78 passengers in twin, triple and quad cabins, all with exterior views and en-suite facilities. The quad, triple and some of the twin cabins on upper deck have upper and lower berths. All other cabins have two lower berths. In your cabin you find a desk with a chair as well as storage space for clothes and equipment.

In the dining room you are treated to delicious meals and in the panorama lounge you can enjoy a drink with breathtaking views of the surrounding polar landscape. This is where your guides entertain and educate you with lectures on the area’s flora, fauna and history. On board there is also a library with a collection of polar books and DVDs. Passengers are welcome on the bridge around the clock and there is always something to see or search for from the spacious observation decks. The atmosphere on board Ocean Nova is relaxed and very friendly. Travelling with this small expedition ship offers an entirely different experience and perspective than you get on a larger and more conventional cruise ship.
