On Kalahari’s eternal savannah, we search for the endemic Kalahari lion with its characteristic black mane. We also hope to encounter exciting animals such as cheetahs, oryxes, jackals and perhaps wild dogs. The adventure continues in the wild and untouched Okavango Delta. This time of the year the delta is lush and green and teems with wildlife. We will explore this oasis in traditional mokoro canoes and enjoy the charming hippos and amazing bird life. During game drives in the Okavango we have a great chance of spotting several of Africa’s most famous characters – leopards, lions, giraffes, elephants or maybe buffalos and hyenas? On this unique trip you will be accompanied by one PolarQuest guide and local guides with in-depth knowledge of the area.

Day 1: Towards Maun, Botswana

We fly to Johannesburg, where we stay one night at a hotel at the airport.

Day 2 – 3: Kalahari, Botswana

Our trip continues towards Maun in Botswana, where we change over to a smaller plane. A short flight takes us to the untamed Kalahari! The Central Kalahari Game Reserve is the second largest game reserve in the world and one of the least visited. The landscape is dominated by sand veld, acacias-trees, and Kalahari apple-leaf-trees, interspersed with grasslands and dotted with occasional pans and fossil river valleys. While the reserve is home to an impressive variety of wildlife, there is one animal that is rather obviously absent – the human being. This is a part of Botswana that is virtually untouched by man.

At our comfortable lodge, Dinaka Camp, we relax and enjoy Africa’s scents, sounds and atmosphere. We enjoy a nice dinner and toast for our adventure to come.

During game drives we have chances of seeing wildlife ranging from giraffe to antelopes, small mammals like the honey badger and bat eared fox, to predators including the black-maned Kalahari lion, cheetah and brown hyena. Authentic San Bushman cultural experiences give insights into an ancient yet sustainable way of life.

Day 4 – 5: From desert to delta and Qorokwe Lodge

We continue by a small plane to the Okavango Delta, an oasis in this dry country, and world-renowned for its huge concentrations of wildlife. Situated in the north-western corner of Botswana, the Okavango Delta is a World Heritage Site as it is the largest inland delta in the world, stretching over 15000 square kilometres. We will experience a sharp contrast as we move from desert to delta, from dry sand to a wonderful water world – with countless meandering waterways and crystal-clear lagoons studded with water lilies, as well as fertile floodplains and reeded islands inhabited with abundant wildlife.

For two nights we stay at Qorokwe, a charming, eco-style lodge with 100% solar-generated power. The name Qorokwe means “the place where the buffalo broke through the bush into the water", evoking the high-density game area in which this camp is situated. Here, we can enjoy mokoro canoe trips along quiet waterways, flanked by elegant reeds and an abundance of birds such as kingfishers and African jacana, while crocodiles rest on the shore. The magnificent African fish eagle is also a common sight.

Day 6 – 7: Tubu Tree Camp, Okavango

Once more we experience the delta from above as a short flight takes us to Tubu Tree Camp, located on a small island in the delta. This traditional style camp is built on raised wooden platforms with beautiful views over the floodplains and surrounding landscape. We rise early to explore parts of the 60 000-hectare Jao Reserve from our Jeeps. Here we have a good chance to see elephant, lion, zebra, giraffe, tsessebe and wildebeest as well as kudu, impala and bushbuck. This is also one of the best places in southern Africa to see the elusive leopard and we are constantly on the lookout. In the evening we enjoy a drink at Tubu’s famous open-air bar under the shade of a marula tree.

Day 8 – 9: Savuti Camp, Linyanti Concessions

Our small planes take us to Savuti Camp. Perched high on the banks of the Savuti Channel, the camp looks down on a miraculous ribbon of territory that has been both savannah and river over the last years. Savuti provides front-row seats to amazing wildlife viewing and the mysteries of the ebb and flow of the Savuti Channel waters. Follow in the ancient tracks of Africa’s great plains game – giraffe, zebra, eland and speciality antelope such as roan and sable – as they roam through the game-rich grassland of the Linyanti Wildlife Reserve. It also holds a magnetic attraction for elephants and several packs of wild dog can be found in the area. Lions, leopards and cheetahs are frequently sighted. Night safaris allow for the discovery of nocturnal creatures such as civets, genets, honey badgers and spring hares. This vast, untamed wilderness is the perfect location for those seeking a unique African adventure in an exclusive and remote big game habitat.

Day 10: Savuti – Maun

After a morning safari, we fly towards Maun in our small aircraft, where we connect with our international flights taking us back home.

Day 11: Arriving home

After an overnight flight we arrive in the morning.

Please note: Our exact itinerary and planned activities depend on weather and wildlife encounters. We always strive to maximise your experience!
