Namibia ReQuest 2018

On this exclusive journey we get an in-depth experience of the true pearls of Namibia. We explore the 80 million years old Namib Desert and we travel over the towering ochre coloured sand dunes by hot air balloon. We then swap the desert for the ocean and explore the charming city of Swakopmund. By private plane we fly northeast, towards the wonderful Desert Rhino Camp. Despite of the barren landscapes of Damaraland, the area offers exclusive wildlife such as the desert adapted elephant and the endangered black rhino. The adventure continues with a stay in the Ongava Game Reserve including safaris in the renowned Etosha National Park. During the dry season the animals gather around the last remaining waterholes.

Accommodation: Hotels and lodges. Transport: Plane, Toyota Land Cruiser, boat and hot air balloon. Participants: Min 10 and max 15 participants. Length: 13 days. Price: From USD 11 450.

Itinerary

Day 1: London - Windhoek, Namibia

We leave for Namibia’s capital, Windhoek.

Day 2: Windhoek

We arrive in Windhoek and transfer to the charming Heinitzburg Hotel, located on a hillside overlooking the capital. We enjoy dinner and a good night’s sleep.

Day 3: Sossusvlei, Namib Desert

We set out in vehicles towards Sossusvlei in the Namib Desert – the oldest desert on earth. We travel through a vast, seemingly endless landscape and during late afternoon we reach the tastefully decorated Kulala Desert Lodge, overlooking the ochre coloured sand dunes – a view that gives us a first glimpse of the magnificent wilderness we are to explore. In our comfortable kulalas we enjoy a good night’s sleep. Kulala means sleeping and each unit is built on a wooden platform to catch the cooling breezes. Take the opportunity to sleep under the stars on your rooftop and wake up to the rising sun – a wonderful experience!

Day 4: With hot air balloon over a sea of sand

Early this morning, as the African sun rises, we glide above a sea of vivid orange sand dunes of Sossusvlei in a hot air balloon. This will most certainly be one of the most lasting impressions of the trip. In the afternoon we explore the dunes on foot, a truly magic experience as the sun sets on the steep dunes and create glorious colours of shadows and light.

Day 5: Towards the Atlantic coast

We travel north-west by road towards Swakopmund. On our journey we enjoy the Namibian countryside and make a stop for lunch and to investigate the fascinating plants and animals of the desert. In the afternoon we reach Swakopmund, a charming coastal town with beautiful German colonial buildings. Here we stay two nights at Beach Lodge, perfectly located right on the beach. Listen to the restless waves and smell the fresh sea breeze of the Atlantic Ocean!

Day 6: Swakopmund

Early morning we board a catamaran in Walvis Bay to head on an adventure in the beautiful bay that offers a range of experiences – the lighthouse at Pelican Point, wrecks, oyster platforms, pelicans and curious fur seals. With some luck we also see leaping dolphins and shy leatherback turtles. In the afternoon we explore the town and if time allows we visit the National Marine Aquarium of Namibia.

Day 7: Swakopmund - Desert Rhino Camp, Damaraland

With small private planes we travel north and inland to the incredible Desert Rhino Camp. Here we stay in Meru-style canvas tents with front verandas to take in the sweeping views in front dotted with scattered euphorbia and ancient welwitschia plants and the dramatic Etendeka Mountains. The area is marked for its tranquil, minimalist beauty, surprising wealth of arid-adapted wildlife and the largest free roaming black rhino population in Africa. The black rhino is an endangered species with less than 5 000 wild individuals remaining in the world. The poaching for their horns posing a constant threat to their survival and the need for urgent actions is crucial. At Desert Rhino Camp we will take part in a thrilling conversation success story.

Day 8: Desert Rhino Camp

A day of adventures lies ahead in this wonderland of unusual plant life, fascinating wildlife and sparse wilderness. During game drives we search for the impressive desert-adapted rhinos living in this semi-desert. Apart from rhino you have chance to see desert-adapted elephant, Hartmann’s mountain zebra, giraffe, gemsbok and kudu as well as cheetah, leopard and spotted hyena. Birdlife is varied with endemics species such as Bokmakierie and Ruppell’s Korhaan. In the evening we gather around a sparkling campfire and marvel at the starry sky.

Day 9: Ongava Tented Camp and Etosha

In the early morning we continue our adventure by car through the desert landscape, towards the renowned Etosha National Park. Late in the afternoon we check in at Ongava Tented Camp, tucked in a hidden valley at the foot of a dolomite hill in Ongava Game Reserve bordering Etosha National Park.

Day 10: Etosha National Park

Etosha National Park is home to 150 mammal species including black and white rhino, lion, elephant and the black-faced impala. We are here during the dry season when the remaining watercourses and waterholes attract large concentrations of wildlife. You can spot zebras and springboks in big herds on the vast, seemingly endless plains, and their predators, in particular lions, are never far away. The park also hosts a rich birdlife with 340 species recorded, for example Monteiro´s hornbill and Rüppell’s parrot.

Day 11: Towards Windhoek

After a last morning safari and delicious lunch, small Cessna planes bring us back to Windhoek, where we check in at a comfortable hotel and enjoy a farewell dinner.

Day 12: Windhoek - London

It now time to bid farewell to this wonderful country and fly back home.

Day 13: London

We arrive in London, bringing with us fantastic memories, many photos and new friendships.
