Day 1: Gothenburg

Welcome to Gothenburg, PolarQuest's hometown and the ship M/S Stockholm’s home port! We board at lunchtime and sail off to explore the archipelago of Bohuslän. We sail overnight towards Norway’s southern tip.

During an expedition cruise of this kind, we are in the hands of weather and wind, hence the program is kept flexible. This part of Norway has an incredible number of beautiful places to choose from, and those mentioned in the program are just examples of places we can visit.

Day 2: Mandal and Under

Around noon, we explore the archipelago outside of Norway’s southernmost community, Mandal. We go ashore and stroll the narrow streets along the characteristic white wooden houses.

We sail past Lindesnes lighthouse, which is Norway's oldest lighthouse, built in 1656. Weather permitting, we go ashore and visit the lighthouse and its museum.

Day 3 – 7: Fjord expedition

Around lunch we reach the fishing community Skudeneshavn, where we visit the museum to learn more about the ancient fishing days and life in the village. We continue into the beautiful Hardangerfjord, 180 km and Norway's second longest fjord.

At the far end of Sørfjorda, a branch of the Hardangerfjord, lies the community of Odda. A bus tour guides us through the beautiful surroundings, and we visit the twin waterfall Låtefoss and the beautiful stave church in Røldal.

We visit the village Kinsarvik. With its location, where the Hardanger Fjord branches off, it has been an important place since the Viking Age and the small church dates to the 1100’s. Here we can go for a waterfall hike. Along the trail that ends at Hardangervidda there are four different waterfalls. The hike takes 3 - 6 hours depending on when you turn around and how many waterfalls you want to pass.

The Hardanger Folk Museum in Utne has since 1911 collected artefacts, buildings and knowledge of the area's rich cultural history. Here you can behold folk costumes, embroidery, violins, historical buildings and art.

The small community of Rosendal is beautifully framed by high mountains. We get a private guided tour of the Skaaluren collection, a museum focusing on shipbuilding that has been so important to the area.

Day 8: Bergen

Early morning, we arrive in Bergen, get off the ship and start the journey home.

This is a preliminary itinerary. Our exact route will depend on the weather and wind conditions. Please keep in mind that flexibility is the key to a successful adventure!

Being on an expedition with M/S Stockholm

For more than 20 years, during spring, summer and autumn, M/S Stockholm has taken our travellers on unforgettable adventures to some of Norway most scenic places. The exploration spirit is obvious and to change course to discover a new location is part of the everyday life on board. With a small ship such as M/S Stockholm we can reach places that are difficult to get to with larger vessels. One of the secrets behind the success of the expedition cruises is our stable Zodiacs. With these we can explore beautiful fjords and fishing communities and go ashore at scenic and historically interesting places. Each trip with M/S Stockholm is unique and the itinerary depends on the weather situation. The captain and his crew as well as your experienced guides will do everything they possibly can to maximize your great adventure.

The M/S Stockholm is a classic ship built in 1953 for the Swedish National Maritime Administration. In 1998 she was totally refitted and started her career as a comfortable polar passenger ship. The M/S Stockholm carries a maximum of 12 passengers in twin cabins with bunk beds. All cabins have private facilities and small windows (portholes). M/S Stockholm is a marvellous piece of maritime history with beautiful brass details and
wooden decks. It is no wonder she is loved by so many! After 20 years of navigating the waters in Svalbard she has the experience and track record of being able to access difficult to reach sites that are inaccessible to other ships.

On board you will enjoy delicious meals in the company of
likeminded travellers, who are all fascinated by the Arctic nature, wildlife and history. The food on board is of high standard and all beverages are included in the price. With such a small party on board, this is like travelling on a private yacht. The crew on board M/S Stockholm are also great enthusiasts of the unique wildlife and unspoiled nature. Their genuine curiosity is a prerequisite for expedition cruises of this kind. A trip on board M/S Stockholm in these northern waters, with its unique wildlife and pristine nature, is an experience of a lifetime! There are two Zodiacs and two guides on board M/S Stockholm.
