ILULISSAT CITY MUSEUM
The city museum in Ilulissat is a local history museum also called Knud Rasmussen's house. The museum has several permanent exhibitions that give an insight into prehistoric life, local history, traditional Inuit culture and not least Knud Rasmussen's history and Arctic expeditions. Works and photographs by Jette Bang and Knud Rasmussen are displayed in the museum, where you also find a research library and a shop with souvenirs and local handicrafts. Ilulissat-city-museum
THE ICE FJORD CENTER
Next to the UNESCO World Heritage site, Ilulissat Icefjord, is the Ilulissat Icefjord Centre, a fantastic building where you can see the exhibition "The Tale of Ice". The exhibition is based on research and facts and explains the area's unique natural and cultural history as well as the climate changes that are clearly noticeable in the Arctic. During spring, summer, and autumn it is possible to enjoy one of Greenland's most exceptional panoramic views from the roof of the building, where you can look out over the Kangia ice fjord. ILULISSAT ART MUSEUM
Ilulissat's art museum is a beautiful wooden house, built in 1923 and designed by the famous architect Helge B. Møller. Until the opening of the museum in 1995, when the house was acquired by the municipal council, five colony managers and five commercial principals have lived in the house. There is a permanent exhibition, where the basis of the collections are the paintings of Emanuel A. Petersen. There is also a changing exhibition where different visual artists exhibit their work. SHOPS
Along the main street in Ilulissat there is a small selection of shops, cafes, and restaurants, where both local beer and local produce are served. In the shops you can find anything from unique Greenland souvenirs to outdoor clothing and interior design items. In the village there is also a small selection of grocery stores, a tourist office and several local tour operators offering a variety of activities.
ACTIVITIES
If you are spending a few extra days in Ilulissat, there are different day activities to choose from such as several hiking trails of different length and degree of difficulty. You can also join a helicopter tour over the Kangia Icefjord or book a guided tour of the city. These activities, among others, are booked directly with the local tour operators in Ilulissat.
