A Morning with Walruses
As we got out of bed, we could see that the sun was shinning, the sky was blue, and the water was flat calm. Another amazing day was about to start in Svalbard.
M/S Sjøveien was anchored in front of our landing for the morning, Torellnesset. From the ship, we could see walruses hauling on the beach. Straight form the ship to the zodiacs, to the land, we slowly made our way towards the haul out.
As we quietly approach, an Arctic fox showed up behind the hill. This little fox was shedding his winter fur and was a good mix of white and brown. He curiously made his way towards us before running in different direction. What a sighting and our guides explained to us that foxes’ sightings are even more rare than Polar bears.
After this show, we made our way toward the walruses, probably more than forty laying on the sandy beach. It is their favorite environment as their food source, clams, is leaving in the sand, underwater. They can eat up to 70 kg of shellfish a day and the smell is a good reminder of it.
As the morning could not be better, we noticed some mothers and calves at the back, close to the water. Born in May, some of the calves were still quite small with no tusk. However, we could see multiple generations as the walruses stay with their moms for the first three years.
After a long time observing these beasts, we went for a walk on the raised beach behind the landing site. We ended the morning with a beautiful view of the ship and the Hinlopenstretet.
Please note: Depending on the lens used for a photo or video shot an animal may appear to be closer than it is. We always follow strict wildlife guidelines to ensure that we do not cause any disturbance.

Since 1999, we have taken travellers on once-in-a-lifetime trips to Svalbard. From May to September our three small expedition ships, carrying only 12 and 50 passengers, explore this magnificent Arctic archipelago. Unpredictability and flexibility are the main keywords when you travel with PolarQuest as the exact route depends on weather, ice conditions and wildlife encounters. Sometimes you might be woken up in the middle of the night if a polar bear has been spotted on the ice.
