You live in Tasiilaq – what do you do for a living?
I live in Tasiilaq in East Greenland. Tasiilaq is a small town of apx 1800 inhabitants, which at the same time makes it the biggest town in East Greenland. The town is beautifully placed among mountains and fjords.
I live here with my girlfriend, who is local, and together we have 3 kids.
I work for the police, where I am captain on the local police boat, and then I have my tour company, Tasiilaq Tours, where we offer tours and activities year-round.
You are originally from Denmark. How long have you lived in Greenland?
I moved from Denmark to Greenland in 2013 at the age of 21.
Originally I was supposed to study in Greenland for 1.5 years, but that turned into 2.5 years. After that we moved to Denmark in December 2015. But in November 2016, we decided to move back to Greenland to my girlfriend’s hometown.
What made you decide to move to Greenland?
I was supposed to study Arctic engineering at the campus in Sisimiut. But I fell in love with being outside, and at some point I decided to drop out, and then I started working in tourism, first in Denmark and then in Tasiilaq.
What is it like to live in such a remote place in the world?
Living in a place like Tasiilaq is a world of contrast. Just as beautiful and fantastic the nature can be, just as harsh and unforgiving it can be if you do not prepare and know how to act in different situations.
It is fantastic to live in a small town where people know each other, say hello to each other, help each other. You also learn to appreciate different things that you usually take for granted. That could be medical help, access to fresh fruit or unlimited supplies.
How would you describe Greenland as a destination for someone who has never been there?
Greenland is a destination you cannot compare to many other destinations, and especially when you go to the more remote parts like Tasiilaq. Here you can get a very personal experience without mass tourism.
The travel to and from your destination is an adventure itself. Do never go to Greenland and have important plans right after, for the risk of getting delayed is a part of our life.
