We started the day with a landing on Salliaruseq Island, where Greenland's remarkable geology immediately caught our attention. The coastline was a beautiful mix of golden-yellow weathered surfaces, where iron-bearing minerals have oxidized, and banded gneiss, creating a striking contrast against the Arctic landscape.
Despite the harsh environment, the island was full of plants: Arctic Willow, Mountain Avens, Bog Labrador Tea, and Chickweed carpeted the ground with surprising bursts of colour.
The views from the island were simply breathtaking. Looking out across Uummannaq Fjord, we were treated with a panorama of towering icebergs drifting silently through the blue waters. We hiked to one of the island's summits, where the spectacular scenery stretched in every direction.
In the afternoon, we explored the fjord by Zodiac, cruising through the stunning waters of Uummannaq Fjord. One of the highlights was visiting a dramatic rock cliff, alive with thousands of black-legged kittiwakes nesting.
Nearby, an immense, sheer rock face rose almost vertically from the sea, creating a landscape so dramatic it felt as though we had stepped into a fantasy film. Bright orange lichens and green scurvy grass clung to the cliffs, adding splashes of colour and we even discovered some Garnet gemstones in the rocks.
As we rounded the next headland, enormous icebergs appeared, scattered like giant sculptures across the fjord.
After a short "touch-and-go" hike to a mountain lake, we returned to the Zodiacs. The moscitos were “greeting us” at the water, therefore we returned quickly to the cozy M/S Balto, filled with memories of another unforgettable day in Greenland's extraordinary wilderness.
