At the entrance to the world’s largest fjord system, Scoresbysund, lies the small village with the long name Ittoqqortoormiit.
Ittoqqortoormiit is home to some 450 Greenlanders who live mainly of fishing and hunting. It is the only settlement in Northeast Greenland, located 500 kilometres north of the Arctic Circle. The nearest town is Tasiilaq, 800 kilometres to the south.
But it’s not only the local pub, the supermarket with freeze-dried food or the little souvenir shop that make the village well worth a visit – it’s the impressively grand nature, the small and colorful houses and the feeling of being very, very far away that affects you.
A huge ice cap surrounds Ittoqqortoormiit for nine months, but for a short period of time ships can stop by, and we plan to make a visit during our trip to northeast Greenland.
