Sunshine, blue skies & humpback whales
PolarQuest’s guides are blogging on board Ocean Nova 6-16 July 2013

While cruising towards Bråsvellbreen and Nordaustlandet, one of the guests spotted two humpback whales behind us. The Captain then slowed down and turned back. Under blue skies and sunshine, between beautiful icebergs, looking like fairytale sculptures, two Humpbacks were feeding in the turquoise waters, surfacing to devour the herded prey. And guess what; they came closer and closer to our ship, diving under it, coming up on one side and then on the other. It almost looked like this pair were showing off, swimming around the ship – for some camera lenses even “too” close… Everyone on board was stunned by this experience. This was definitively not an everyday sight – for any of us!
Enjoy Harish Singhal’s (one of the travellers) movie of the amazing encounter with the humpback whales!

Since 1999, we have taken travellers on once-in-a-lifetime trips to Svalbard. From May to September our three small expedition ships, carrying only 12 and 50 passengers, explore this magnificent Arctic archipelago. Unpredictability and flexibility are the main keywords when you travel with PolarQuest as the exact route depends on weather, ice conditions and wildlife encounters. Sometimes you might be woken up in the middle of the night if a polar bear has been spotted on the ice.
