Into the Unknown

As M/S Quest heads west, leaving civilisation behind and venturing straight into the unknown, we are introduced to the journey ahead. Our Expedition Leader reminds us that this truly is an expedition – a voyage where nature and the weather are in charge.

This quickly becomes apparent over the coming week – starting right away. The weather in the north, where we had originally planned to go, is terrible, with winds far too strong. The decision is therefore made to head south instead.

When we wake the following morning, we find ourselves in the beautiful fjord of Hornsund. After a short Zodiac ride, where we are greeted by a harbour seal resting on the beach, we set off on a hike up a mountain ridge. Despite a light dusting of fresh snow, there are clear signs that summer is on its way. The slopes are covered in flowers, especially the stunning purple saxifrage, whose small lilac-pink cushions are scattered across the ground. We also spot buds of the Svalbard poppy, ready to burst into bloom.

When we reach the top of the ridge, we are rewarded with a breathtaking view of a glacier stretching all the way down to a small bay. Suddenly, someone notices ripples on the water. Moments later, something grey breaks the surface. Is it another seal? Then several pale grey backs emerge—it is a group of young beluga whales swimming through the bay below us.

We sit for a while, watching these beautiful animals, and our very first day has already shown us that we are truly on a wilderness adventure. The sight before us – towering, jagged mountains and a pod of whales swimming in front of the glacier—is hard to surpass and feels like a true privilege to witness.

The week ahead brings more adventures, changing weather, and unforgettable encounters at night.
