Local Tales and Wildlife Encounters
Today, as a contrast to yesterday morning, we woke up to the wind tugging the windows on M/S Quest. As we ventured deeper into Liefdefjord, it stilled, and we were able to lower Zodiacs on the water. Even if the weather was grey and snowy, it turned out to be a lovely 2hr cruise along the ice edge, where we shared Svalbard stories.
We were lucky to encountered a minke whale, seals and a fox running on the ice. When we were back onboard it was time to jump in the cold water - at least for those who deared. The Polar plunge is a proper challenge, especially on a day such as today when the bay is filled with sea ice, and the air filled with snow.
Many screams and funny faces later we heaved anchor and left for Mushamna in Woodfjorden. Throughout the way we had some scenic navigation while passing through some sea ice. Mushamna - a palace for locals of Svalbard. One of the most famous cabins, due to its size, high standard and background story.
We landed and had the privilege of seeing fresh polar bear prints passing the cabin area - pawprints from a mother and cub. After inspecting the tracks and sharing a local tale or two, we went for a hike along the shoreline. We saw reindeer and ptarmigans and finished the landing by picking up trash along the shoreline.
Coming back on board M/S Quest, we were met by the smell of barbecue. The crew had put together a fantastic barbecue party, with lots of grilled delicacies which we enjoyed with the surrounding mountain scenery. We even heard that after most had gone to bed, some were still dancing in the midnight sun on the outer decks.
Please note: Depending on the lens used for a photo or video shot an animal may appear to be closer than it is. We always follow strict wildlife guidelines to ensure that we do not cause any disturbance.

Since 1999, we have taken travellers on once-in-a-lifetime trips to Svalbard. From May to September our three small expedition ships, carrying only 12 and 50 passengers, explore this magnificent Arctic archipelago. Unpredictability and flexibility are the main keywords when you travel with PolarQuest as the exact route depends on weather, ice conditions and wildlife encounters. Sometimes you might be woken up in the middle of the night if a polar bear has been spotted on the ice.
