A walk on the beach
Follow our travellers on their walk on the beach of Bjonahamna in this blog post, written by our guides onboard M/S Sjøveien!
It was windy this afternoon, but with the wind, the clouds also got blown away and we went out in blue sky and sunshine to Bjonahamna. It was our first tundra hike on this voyage and we admired the steep cliffs, where the northern fulmars nested high up. A bit further down, reindeers were grazing on purple saxifrage and we saw a ptarmigan couple flying in. As we proceeded with our walk, our guides told us to keep our eyes peeled for fossils, and look - we discovered more and more petrified shells and fossilized corals, but also eider down, lichens, reindeer hair and even fox fur! It was a lovely stroll and we all chitchated and got to know each other better. As we looked behind us, we noticed, that two reindeer followed us along the beach, constantly in a twenty meter distance. They were obviously very curious. When we stopped they stopped as well, when we walked on, they proceeded with us, it was hilarious!
Back onboard we gathered in the cozy lounge on Sjøveien where we had our first "recap“. Therese and Mattias presented us tomorrow's plans and we got to learn more about the beluga whales, which we have seen earlier this morning in Adolfbukta. Who would have thought that they are called the "canaries of the sea“? Or that they are born actually grey, not white? And just as we finished speaking about their diet, our Chef Thomas and his crew invited us to the big table, where he presented us what he had created for dinner tonight. And we could figure out directly, that he is one of these chefs, who cooks with his heart and soul and he would surprise us during the coming week with many more of his amazing creations.

Since 1999, we have taken travellers on once-in-a-lifetime trips to Svalbard. From May to September our three small expedition ships, carrying only 12 and 50 passengers, explore this magnificent Arctic archipelago. Unpredictability and flexibility are the main keywords when you travel with PolarQuest as the exact route depends on weather, ice conditions and wildlife encounters. Sometimes you might be woken up in the middle of the night if a polar bear has been spotted on the ice.
