M/S Stockholm has reached Svalbard

Read our guide Beau Pruneau’s report from the final days of this incredible journey from Bergen to Svalbard. Let the Arctic season begin!

Leaving Tromsø behind, with a full fuel tank and full bellies, we headed north away from the Norwegian coast.

A last contingent of white-beaked dolphins swam playfully alongside us as we sailed out of the fjords and archipelago of islands.

Due north.

A full day at sea awaited us. Rolling waves, soaring fulmars, and another dolphin kept us company as we rocked and rolled our way towards Bjørnøya.

Bear Island.

Arriving, we pushed our way through a belt of ice along the coastline of the island.

We Zodiac-cruised past massive bird cliffs, reaching over 300 meters in height above us. We landed and hiked in deep snow above nesting fulmars.

Success, as Bjørnøya is often an untouchable jewel of the north. An exposed island, often wrought with raging storms, and dense fog.

This time we succeeded. We then headed further north.

Svalbard – The kingdom of ice.

Pushing our way deep into the pack ice in the south of the archipelago, we scouted and absorbed the peaceful silence of a wild, raw, and beautiful place.

Wildlife such as seals, walruses, reindeer, ptarmigan, king eiders, and belugas kept us company as we enjoyed the last days of our epic journey in the far north.

From Bergen to Longyearbyen. Norway, Bjørnøya, and Svalbard. A special trip in many ways – diversity par excellence.

Until next year.
