Marie Sieberns

Guide

Marie Sieberns grew up in Lübeck, near the Baltic Sea, and from an early age she loved spending time by the water and exploring the life in and around it. During her studies in Biology and later Biological Oceanography, she deepened her understanding of the amazing world around us, especially the ocean. Around that time, she also started diving, which eventually led her to become a scientific diver and experience underwater life from a completely different perspective.

Marie’s first experiences in the northern regions came through trips to Iceland and later during a nine-month work and travel stay in Canada after finishing school. These experiences sparked her curiosity about the Arctic and made her want to get involved in research there. This eventually took her to Svalbard, where she started as an intern in the biology department at the university center (UNIS), collecting samples from boats around the archipelago. Marie was captivated by the unique environment and decided to stay and continue working at UNIS.

At the same time, Marie wanted to explore more of Svalbard, so she became a guide for hiking, snowmobile, and boat trips, with a special focus on wildlife, glaciers, and fjords. Since September 2024, Marie has worked as a guide both on land and at sea in Svalbard, Tromsø, and Antarctica. In her free time, she loves being outdoors with her camera, hiking, kayaking, skiing, or ice climbing.
