Svalbard Autumn Light with Frida Hermansson

Join us on an exclusive 11-day photo expedition to Svalbard with Frida Hermansson as your photographic leader. This trip is designed for both experienced photographers and amateurs, who want to make the most of the opportunities offered by the High Arctic landscape. Aboard the classic expedition ship M/S Stockholm, you will travel in a small group of just 12 participants, with full focus on light, subjects and visual expression in one of the world’s most dramatic environments.

We explore a world of glistening glaciers, beautiful fjords, dramatic mountain ranges and fascinating wildlife – from large walrus colonies and curious Arctic foxes to majestic polar bears and Svalbard reindeer in their autumn coats and impressive antlers. With a little luck, we may also enjoy magnificent sunsets and capture the landscape in the magical autumn light. During Zodiac cruises, we get closer to the landscape and seek out the best possible photo angles. Each day is shaped by the weather, the light and the best photo opportunities. This is a trip where nature sets the pace and the photos takes centre stage.

Although this is strictly a photo tour, of course non-dedicated photographers can come along and have an absolutely amazing arctic experience.

Itinerary

Day 1: Longyearbyen, Svalbard

We arrive in Longyearbyen and transfer to our hotel.

Day 2 - 11: Expedition cruising

Explore Longyearbyen on your own before meeting up your fellow travellers and guides for lunch. In the afternoon we embark the expedition ship and sail out through the spectacular Isfjorden - the Arctic expedition has started! We are now in a part of the world where we are totally dependent on the ice and weather conditions. Our exact itinerary depends on these factors and on the wildlife we encounter. Our ambition is to head out on Zodiac cruises every day and to go ashore when the opportunity arises. Here are some examples of places we may visit:

Northwest Spitsbergen

The scientific village of Ny-Ålesund is situated in Kongsfjorden. It was from here that Amundsen and Nobile started their heroic expeditions to the North Pole. Two other courageous attempts to reach the North Pole started on the island of Danskøya. Swedish explorer Andrée made an attempt with a hydrogen balloon and American journalist Wellman started with an airship. There are still interesting remnants from these expeditions left on this site.

Magnificent fjords

Svalbard offers the visitor countless spectacular fjords. During our journey we will explore a few of them such as: Liefdefjorden, meaning “The fjord of love”, is lined with snow-covered mountain peaks and here we hope to cruise along the face of the spectacular Monaco Glacier. Many common eiders and pinkfooted geese nest in the area. In Krossfjorden we revel in the beautifully sculptured glacier front.

Hinlopen

The strait between the two largest islands in Svalbard, Spitsbergen and Nordaustlandet, offers a range of interesting landing sites. Among them is Kinnvika – a research station built by Sweden and Finland during the International Geophysical Year of 1957/1958. From here, observations were made in various fields of geophysics, including meteorology, aurora borealis, and geomagnetism.

Eastern Svalbard

The island of Nordaustlandet is covered by an enormous ice cap and fascinates naturalists as well as historians. Here the giant glacier
Bråsvellbreen stretches for 200 kilometres! Barentsøya and Edgeøya offer magnificent landscapes and vast tundra. Chances to encounter walruses, Arctic fox and Svalbard reindeer are good here.

Southwest Spitsbergen

The grand fjords of Hornsund offer spectacular glaciers and a breathtaking landscape of towering mountain peaks, often reaching above the clouds. On a clear day we can see the summit of the highest mountain Hornsundtind, measuring 1431 meters.

Day 12: Longyearbyen

Early morning we disembark our expedition ship and begin our journey back home.

Please note: All itineraries are for guidance only. Our exact route will depend on the ice, weather conditions, wildlife and government regulations. The places mentioned are just examples of some of the many sites Svalbard has to offer. We always strive to maximise your experience. Please remember that flexibility is the key to a successful expedition!

Environmental Regulations

To ensure responsible tourism and protection of the environment, new regulations came into force in Svalbard on 1 January 2025. Read more about the regulations and PolarQuest's comments about these changes.

About our photographic leader Frida Hermansson

Frida has had a deep fascination and love for wildlife and nature since childhood. She also works as an art director and graphic designer, which has greatly influenced her visual expression. In her photography, she is curious and constantly seeks new ways to portray her subjects — whether they are wildlife, landscapes, or graphic details. Frida is co-owner of Wild Nature fotoresor and is the photographic leader during this trip together with Wild Nature.

Frida has held several exhibitions and presentations, and she has appeared on Swedish national television in Mitt i Naturen (In the Middle of Nature), in the episode “The Art of Photographing Nature.” Her images have been published in The Sun, Epoch Times, Another Escape, Fotosidan Magasin, Camera Natura, and in articles and reports on Natursidan.se, as well as in the books Experiences in Stockholm’s Nature, Experiences in Sweden’s Nature (WWF’s Panda Book of the Year 2024), and in local media. She has also been a guest contributor on the Swedish Museum of Natural History’s Instagram account and served as a judge in several photography competitions.

Frida will be giving lectures onboard. If you like she will look at your photos and come up with positive photo criticism. Frida will of course also assist you with the necessary help and camera technical and photographic advice.

Photographic guidance on board

During our Svalbard expedition, Frida will be available for individual photographic guidance in the field. She will also give several talks and sessions on light and composition, how to work with different creative techniques such as ICM and multiple exposure, and how to create a strong portfolio with breadth and variety from a trip. Halfway through and towards the end of the expedition, there will also be opportunities for image feedback, helping you to further develop your photography.

The ship M/S Stockholm has two zodiacs used for cruises, landings and better photo angles. The crew, the captain and our guides on the tour have extensive experience in both the Arctic and photography under the special conditions that prevail. The crew is Swedish and English speaking and the participants can be from several countries. The ship is perfect for photography. Although this is strictly a photography tour, of course non-dedicated photographers can come along and have an absolutely amazing arctic experience. The fact that it is a photo tour means that we spend the time we need to get a chance for good photos. Often this means a little more time with the motifs.

A classic expedition ship loved by many.

The M/S Stockholm is a classic vessel, originally built in 1953 for the Swedish National Maritime Administration. In 1998, she underwent a complete refit and embarked on her new journey as a comfortable polar expedition ship. The crew's genuine enthusiasm for the Arctic's unique wildlife and pristine environments is a key to the authentic expedition cruises offered on the M/S Stockholm.

The M/S Stockholm accommodates up to 12 passengers in cozy twin cabins equipped with bunk beds, private facilities, and small windows (portholes). With her beautiful brass details and wooden decks, M/S Stockholm stands as a stunning piece of maritime history, cherished by many for her charm and elegance. A journey through these northern waters, with its unparalleled wildlife and untouched landscapes, is an experience of a lifetime! To enhance exploration, the ship is equipped with two Zodiacs and staffed by two knowledgeable guides.

Said about the trip

  • Alf Lindberg, Sweden - September 2025

Consistently high quality in all aspects of a great travel experience. Good information before the trip, knowledgeable and friendly guides, the Stockholm ship and its crew are very pleasant to travel with, and both the guides and crew work hard to ensure that I, as a traveller, had a great experience, from wildlife and nature to culture and excellent food. In short, you feel well looked after in every way.
  • Susanne Zuelli, Switzerland - September 2025

I enjoyed every minute of the trip, the wonderful people of the crew, the two excellent guides, the expert photographer, the outstanding chef. Actually, I don’t know what to name first because at the same time, it was also the incredible landscapes and the wonderful animals
  • Madelene Eriksson, Sweden - September 2025

The trip gets 10 out of 10. Especially the expedition leader and guides' enthusiasm, knowledge and commitment.
  • Annie Katz

I have finally come up for my first breath of air and had to write you & tell you about our trip. It was, simply put…..WONDERFUL in ALL respects. The Stockholm is the best ship. I just loved being on her again. Our guides could not have been a better choice for us. Both of them full of life, adventure, knowledge about the Arctic and all of the flora and fauna to be met there. The cook was fabulous! The food was exceptional….his cookies are to absolutely die for. We saw every animal and bird there was to see in Svalbard. As you mentioned, every trip is different, and I think this time I got to photograph things I did not see the last time. What a plus! The trip was just plain PERFECT.
  • Mary Ann McDonald

Every one of the crew worked very hard to give us the best trip possible. They went out of their way to look for bears and seals, to provide Zodiac excursions and to help make it like ‘home’ on the M/S Stockholm. Both our guides spent many hours either up in the crow’s nest, or awake during the night in the bridge, helping to look for photo subjects. We couldn’t have asked for more.
  • Blair & Jacob Briggs

Jacob and I enjoyed the trip on board M/S Stockholm very much. It was truly an incredible experience. Our guide was very helpful and qualified. He was always pleasant and willing to answer questions for everyone.
  • Gerry Van der Walt

The trip was absolutely amazing and I cannot commend the staff and crew of the Stockholm enough. The sightings and weather obviously takes care of itself but the Captain and his team made the experience truly next level. They are a very special group of people.
